5. If yes, what have been the benefits?

Southern Cross    In current casse, retained a valued and experienced        
                  former FT staff member; in past, aided staff with family   
                  responsibilities.                                          

Griffith          Primarily used for weekend shifts, however must work some  
University        time during the week to keep up with changes.              

Adelaide Uni      Get 2 people with different knowledge bases for the price  
                  of one; benefits staff who need/prefer PT work.            
                  Overlapping timetables are needed to ensure communication  
                  , and extra time needed to attend meetings, etc.           

Monash            Larger pool of people to staff desk, and FT staff are      
                  available for other patron requests during the week.  FT   
                  and PT staff work jointly on one shift per week to ensure  
                  continuity of procedures.                                  

Sydney Uni        Provides additional staff at busy times, and builds a      
                  pool of experienced PT and casual staff.                   

ADFA              Basic reference services are available at nights and       
                  weekends, at lower cost than overtime for existing staff.  

Wollongong Uni    Broadens skills and promotes a greater understanding of    
                  whole-library issues.                                      

CSU               Access to high-quality staff not in a position to work     
                  FT.  greater variety of skills available to the Library.   

Uni of Southern   Easier rostering due to larger number of staff, can get    
Qld               more desk hours from PT staff than FT staff.  Flexibility  
                  in workflows and a larger staff pool.                      

Queensland Uni    Flexibility of rosters for desk, particularly nights and   
                  weekends.  Cheaper.  Retain trained, professional staff    
                  who prefer PT work.                                        

James Cook        Hardworking, committed staff, flexibility of hours, can    
                  be a source of FT employees.                               

UNSW              Retention of skilled staff who prefer to work PT.          

Uni of Melbourne  Branch 1 - Maintains expertise in the section, meets       
                  individual requirements.  Branch 2 - greater flexibility   
                  for staff                                                  


6. If no, why has this been unsuccessful?

Southern Cross    Problem of changing circumstances EG PT staff may want to  
                  move to FT but no position available                       

Griffith          Not effective in a Faculty/Liaison librarian role          
University                                                                   

CSU               Wouldn't recommend more than 1/3 of Reference staff being  
                  PT                                                         

Uni of Southern   Can increase training loads, communication can be a        
Qld               problem.  Advantages have outweighed disadvantages to      
                  date.                                                      

Central Qld Uni   Jobshare not permitted by University                       

Queensland Uni    Difficulties ensuring PT staff are informed of current     
                  activities and developments in the library.  Fewer         
                  opportunities to attend training and development           
                  activities during limited work hours                       

UNSW              Downside is additional cost of training, communication     
                  and supervision.  Lack of continuity and follow through    
                  of problems.                                               

Uni of Melbourne  Branch 1 - No response;  Branch 2 - Difficulty in          
                  maintaining continuity of services, keeping staff up to    
                  date in changews in procedures.  PT/Jobshare staff often   
                  less motivated, less interested in their work, less        
                  available for committee work, resulting in greater burden  
                  for FT staff.  Training has to be duplicated, difficult    
                  to schedule meetings with full staff prsent.  Staff in     
                  jobshare situations tend to schedule leave so they are     
                  both off work at the same time.
