WA university libraries to review cataloguing processes

Four Western Australian universities will work together to reduce the costs of their cataloguing operations.

The first stage of the project is the appointment of UNILINC Limited to undertake a detailed study and prepare a final report by the end of April 1997.

The study will verify the cataloguing costs of the university libraries at Curtin, Edith Cowan, Murdoch and Western Australia. An assessment of the feasibility, costs and benefits of alternatives, ranging from outsourcing in whole or part through to making changes to existing operations will follow.

'The prime outcome of this project will be to improve client access to resources in a cost-effective way', according to the leader of the project team, Ms Vicki Williamson, University Librarian at Curtin.

'By collaborating on this and similar projects the Western Australian Group of University Librarians can enhance the competitive positions of all four institutions', Ms Williamson said.

'We are particularly pleased that UNILINC were successful with their proposal. UNILINC have extensive experience in the field of academic libraries, an in-depth knowledge of cataloguing operations and experience in costing the options we are interested in', she said.
