HeinOnline Platform & Content. (22/7/08)
HeinOnline is really an umbrella term, and more commonly associated with the interface, and not so much the library collection subscribed to within.  Currently, all CAUL members subscribe to HeinOnline's Core Collection
We do provide title lists on our website which allows you to browse the content in the various collections
We also do provide title lists to some ERM platform provides, including SerialsSolutions, although I do not believe we have worked yet with Tdnet or EBSCO A - Z.  In the event that they are offering Federated Searching to their platforms, we would need to work with them to authorize them as approved vendors of HeinOnline content and information.

2008 pricing for HeinOnline US$9,395.00 less a 30% discount, for a total of US$6,576.50.  Institutions with <1000 FTE qualify for a 35% discount.  A percentage of the price increase is attributed to the updating of collections previously available in HeinOnline, as well as new content/library modules added to the database which was previously unavailable. (confirmed 28/9/07)

Pricing for 2007
2007 pricing for HeinOnline US$8,548.45 less a 30% discount, for a total of US$5,983.92.  A percentage of the price increase is attributed to the updating of collections previously available in HeinOnline, as well as new content/library modules added to the database which was previously unavailable. Pricing for 2006
The list price for 2006 will be US$7,565.00.
.... we are proposing to restructure the current Consortia Agreement for Australia and New Zealand law schools.

Proposed Agreement:
Enrollment of 1,000 law students or greater, there will be no change in the discount of 30%
Enrollment of 1,000 law students or less, we will offer a discount of 35%
If 100% of law schools participate, there will be an additional *5% discount as follows:
Enrollment of 1,000 law students or greater, the discount will be 35%
Enrollment of 1,000 law students or less, the discount will be 40%
NOTE:  We must gain at least 1 new subscriber for the proposed discount schedule to take effect.
Q.  would you mind spelling out the costs under the proposed regime below, as well as the cost if there are no new subscribers?
A.  The current list price for HeinOnline is US$6,695.00, and we already offer a 30% discount to CAUL subscribers.  Under the proposed agreement, enrollment of 1,000 law students or greater will see no change in the discount of 30%; enrollment of 1,000 law students or less will be offered a 35% discount.  If there are no new subscribers, the discounts would not change.

Q.  When do you plan your next price increase?  Is this list price valid for 2006?  What happened to the suggestion that Hein content would be modularised?
A.  The current price of US$6,695.00 less 30% discount is good until December 31, 2005, at which time there will be a slight price increase.  The Board has advised me that it will not be greater than 13%, which will allow for about a 6% price increase, as well as an additional 7% for new content added during the year 2005.
With regard to content being modularized, this is being discussed with the Board and .... a final decision prior to January 1, 2007.

Pricing for 2005
2005 HeinOnline renewal subscription .... US$6,695.00.  CAUL members receive a 30% discount so that would reduce the price to about $4686.50
Beginning with renewals in 2006 we expect .... roll out modular pricing that will allow greater flexibility to subscriptions.  Subscribers will have the option to pick and choose from the following Library Modules that are included in HeinOnline (there will be more depending on what we release between now and then):

Most-Cited Law Journals
Core U.S & Most-Cited Law Journals
International and Non-U.S. Law Journals
Federal Register Library
Treaties and Agreements Library
U.S. Supreme Court Library
U.S. Attorney General Opinions
Legislative History Library
Legal Classics Library
Criminal Justice Library
Pricing for 2004
The current pricing for 2004 is USD$5,575.00 less 30% to CAUL members = $3,902.50

Pricing in 2003
The subscription price will be USD 4,750 less a discount, now 30%, for CAUL members. (7/3/03)
A limited special offer is to provide the rest of 2003 at no charge, and 2004 at a 40% discount. In later years, the renewal discount would be the same as that for the other subscribers (30%). (29/9/03)
The invoice for the 2003 subscription will be going to CAUL in December.  The 2003 subscription price will be $4500, less the 50% CAUL member discount. (USD).  Confirmation of renewals to CAUL Office by 25/10/02.  New subscribers anytime.

Hein-On-Line is rapidly converting all law review journals and providing on-line access to law libraries around the world.
[Hein-On-Line By James W. Shelar.  Published September 3, 2001 LLRX  Law Library Resource Xchange, LLC.]

I invite you to have a look at it by signing on as a guest to the web site www.wshein.com and then going to Hein-On-Line and signing on as a guest. You will only be able to review volume one of each title, but even this will give a good idea of the capability of Hein-On-Line.

The subscription price is US$3995 for a full year. However, I am authorised to offer all libraries in Australia a 20% discount. That makes the price US$3,196. At present exchange rates that translates into approximately AUD$6,088. However, I can offer further discounts depending on how many subscriptions I can get in Australia. If I were to secure 10 to 15 subscriptions the discount would increase to 25 % [US$2,996.25]; 16 to 20 subscriptions 30% [US$2,796.50]; 21 to 25 subscriptions 35% [US$2,596.75]; and 26 or more 40% [US$2,397].

Although Hein-On-line covers mainly legal material, including criminology, there is much in these journals that is of scholarly interest to non-lawyers. If all Australian Universities were to subscribe Hein has agreed to give a 50% discount [US$1,997.50]. That is a deal that has not been offered anywhere else.

As at 15th February 2001, 1,635,104 pages were available. The rate of growth of Hein-On-Line is such that by the end of 2001 there will be at least 3,500,000 pages available. I am also in the process of trying to persuade the publishers of Australian law review journals to add their titles, thus ensuring their permanent availability in on-line access form.

To purchase what is currently available in Hein-On-Line in hard copy would cost US$91,822. If 38 libraries were to subscribe to Hein-On-Line in a consortium the total cost would be US$75,905. If that figure were broken down on the basis of EFTS the cost may well be affordable for every university. I should add that everyone in every University would have on-line access to Hein-On-Line.

We can consider New Zealand as part of Australia for this purpose. I would also be happy to include the associate members. The consortium can be as big as you like. I would need at least 38 libraries to subscribe to get the price down to 50%.
